About Oakey
Located on the Darling Downs just 157 km west of Brisbane and 29 km west of Toowoomba, Oakey is a small country town situated 402 m above sea-level. It was named after the river oaks found on the nearby creek. Oakey was first settled in the early 1840s when pastoralists moved into the area claiming large areas of land for grazing. The township was formed in 1867 with the arrival of the railway line.

Acland Coal Mining Museum is one of the most interesting coal mining museums in the country and is situated on the old Acland coal field which still operated as recently as 1984 and was regarded as the smallest coal mine in Australia.
Bernborough a life-size bronze statue stands outside the Jondaryan shire office in memory of this legendary local racehorse.
Flypast Museum of Australian Army Flying which is located north of the town at the Oakey air base records the history of army flying as well as the history of flight and the early history of the RAAF. The museum is recognised as having a superb collection of material from World War I and II and includes every aircraft flown by the army.
Jondaryan Woolshed Historical Museum and Park is of particular interest to people fascinated by our rural heritage. Attraction features historic buildings, machinery, equipment and collections.
The Bunya Mountains and National Park is home to about 120 species of birds and many mammals, frogs and reptiles including some rare and threatened species. Bird life is abundant and visitors can indulge in bird watching and rainforest walks. The picnic areas are popular with visitors and have lots of wildlife including wallabies and brightly coloured parrots.
Wineries in the area are Gowrie Mountain Estate, Rimfire and Wedgetail Ridge Estate and are all within 20 minutes from the Oakey Motor Inn.
